AMD will roll out its new budget-friendly RDNA GPUs, designed to win back major market share from Nvidia, at the CES show in January. So says Benchlife (via Igor’s Lab) and if correct it will very likely mean AMD’s next mainstream GPUs beat Nvidia’s competing chips to market by as much as six months.

The Taiwanese website claims that graphics card makers, otherwise known as AIBs or add-in board manufacturers, have begun boot testing their RDNA 4 cards using AMD’s upcoming Navi 48 and Navi 44 GPUs in preparation for that CES launch.

As Andy reported a couple of days ago, AMD recently confirmed rumours that RDNA 4 will not target the high end. Instead, AMD wants the new GPUs to be affordable for millions of gamers, not just “people who can afford Porsches and Ferraris”.

AMD’s senior vice president and general manager of the Computing and Graphics Business group Jack Huyhn also explained that the aim is to increase AMD’s GPU market share from around 19% today to more like 40% or even 50%.

For once some good news for beleaguered chip giant, Intel. The EU Court of Justice has upheld Intel’s partially successful appeal against a very old antitrust case dating back to the early 2000s. So now Intel only owes the EU about $350 million, instead of over $1 billion. Huzzah!

In 2022, and in response to an appeal by Intel, the EU General Court ruled that part of an earlier 2009 decision against Intel should be overturned. The European Commission then appealed that, er, partially successful appeal by Intel against the 2009 decision. And now the highest court in the EU has upheld the 2022 decision.

In other words, that part is now a done deal and can’t be re-appealed (okay, that’s not an actual word). But what part of which decision, exactly? The short version goes something like this.

Two-time Olympic swimming champion Conor Dwyer has announced his retirement, after receiving a 20-month ban for having testosterone pellets surgically inserted into his body. Dwyer had failed three drug tests late last year, the United States Anti-Doping Agency said on Oct. 11.

A panel with the American Arbitration Association determined that Dwyer had violated the sport’s anti-doping rules and suspended him from competition from Dec. 21, 2018 through Aug. 20, 2020.

Testosterone pellets are a form of hormone therapy that are implanted under the skin and slowly release testosterone over the course of a few months. Increased testosterone can boost an athlete’s performance by promoting muscle building.

Dwyer had testified before the panel that he did not know inserting the pellets would count as an anti-doping rule violation and that he had been suffering from health issues, including difficulty sleeping, fatigue, depression and anxiety. He said that he was primarily concerned with “his overall mental health and well-being,” and not focused on swimming.

As we get closer to the October 24 release of Cities: Skylines 2, Paradox Interactive is sharing more about how the city builder sequel works. Today in a new video and development diary we learned a lot about how traffic will find its way through the cities we build using a new AI pathfinding system.

This pathfinding system already sounds more complex than the one in the original Cities: Skylines, which operated solely on proximity. It also sounds more realistic, since one of the factors that will help AI decide where to go is the cost of things like parking and transportation. 

And just like in real life, the younger simulated residents of Cities: Skylines 2 don’t have as much money as the older folks do.

“In Cities: Skylines II agents choose a route based on a pathfinding cost,” reads the development diary, which explains that cost is derived from four different elements: time, comfort, behavior, and money. AI “agents” (simulated people) will use those elements to determine their most optimal pathfinding route while traveling through the city, and different agents will have different priorities. The World War 2 RTS Company of Heroes 3 is set to launch in February, but before that happens a multiplayer tech test will take place on Steam beginning on January 11—and you can sign up to take part now.

This tech test is open to everyone, and getting in is very simple: Just head around to Company of Heroes 3’s Steam page and click the “Request Access” button for the playtest, available just below the pre-purchase options. Click again to confirm, and you’re done—that’s it, that’s the whole process. You’ll be notified by email when the test goes live, or if you sign up after it’s already underway, you’ll be prompted to download the test version immediately.

There have already been a couple of multiplayer tests for Company of Heroes 3, and we’ve also had some hands-on time with the campaign. which has changed quite a bit over the course of the past year; developer Relic also recently confirmed that Company of Heroes 3 will support mods at launch.

As promised, Helldivers 2 has finally called in pest control to take care of its tank infestation. That’s via a patch that dropped this morning—which should prompt a great sigh of relief from the community.

In case you aren’t acquainted with the game’s creature culture, let me shed some light. At higher difficulties, Helldivers 2 has this nasty habit of spawning heavily-armoured creeps on top of you. Bile titans, chargers, hulks, annihilator tanks, the works. Because of the way armour functions, if you don’t have the right equipment to deal with these guys, your only winning move is to run with your democratic tail tucked between your legs.

This was manageable initially because of the Railgun—an anti-tank gun so good it warranted a nerf. The only problem? There wasn’t really anything to replace it. Its contemporaries (like the Recoilless Rifle) were all too slow to thin the herd, leading to plenty of screenshots with five-to-seven bile titans engaging in an impromptu vomit flash-mob. Mechs have been added to the game, however while they are rad as hell, their supplies of tank-busting rockets are severely limited. Budget cuts, what can you do?

Redfall, the underbaked and doomed FPS from Prey and Dishonored studio Arkane, once sat alongside your Starfields, your Halos, and your Microsoft Flight Sims in the Xbox events of yore (2021), but then, well, it came out earlier this year, and that put paid to that. Between the bugs and limp, lacklustre gameplay, the game felt beyond saving to me, and it feels like Microsoft might agree. Since Redfall’s 1.1 patch in June this year, the game has lain dormant, save for the odd chirrup from its Twitter account.

That’s probably one of the reasons why (as spotted by PCGamesN), Redfall’s Steam player count has been so wince-inducingly low in recent weeks. A cursory check of SteamDB reveals that, since the game’s all-time peak of 6,124 players during its release period five months back, its number of players has mostly hovered around the low double digits. But in the last week or two it’s been hitting a single-digit player count regularly. Last Sunday, there were two players online at one point. Yup.

Image host Imgur announced a change to its terms of service on April 19 that will ban NSFW content, as well commence the deleting of an unspecified number of older images “not tied to a user account.” The announced changes are set to take effect on May 15. Imgur did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.

Imgur was founded in 2009 as a way of hosting and sharing images intended for other social networks⁠—for a long time, it was the default way to attach images to Reddit posts, for example, but also saw extensive use on other sites and forums. Though the site declined in relevance following Reddit’s rollout of its own, internal image hosting service, Imgur is still widely used. The company itself boasts of 300 million unique visitors and “billions” of pageviews a month, while a Fast Company story in 2013 stated that the site already had a library of over 650 million images just four years after its founding.
